Kemba Walker Announces Retirement from Professional Basketball After 12 Seasons
Former lottery pick and four-time All-Star Kemba Walker has announced his retirement from professional basketball. Walker, who spent 12 seasons in the NBA, confirmed his decision on Tuesday, closing the chapter on an illustrious career filled with remarkable highs and challenging lows.
Journey in the NBA
Selected as the ninth overall pick by the then-Charlotte Bobcats in the 2012 NBA Draft, Walker quickly established himself as a player to watch. He made three All-Star appearances during his tenure with the Bobcats, who later became the Hornets. His excellence with the team earned him a spot on the All-NBA Second Team, showcasing his significant impact on the court.
Walker’s journey in the league saw him don the jerseys of four different franchises. Following his impressive stint in Charlotte, he joined the Boston Celtics in a sign-and-trade deal, a move that sent Terry Rozier to the Hornets. In his first season with the Celtics, Walker was selected as an All-Star and played a pivotal role in helping the team reach the Eastern Conference finals in the NBA bubble. However, his time in Boston was marred by recurring knee soreness and other health issues that hampered his performance and availability.
Brief Stints and Career Averages
After parting ways with the Celtics, Walker had brief stints with the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks before concluding his NBA journey in 2023. Over 750 career games, Walker posted career averages of 19.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists, solidifying his reputation as a reliable offensive threat.
Adding an international chapter to his career, Walker spent a season overseas playing for AS Monaco. His performances continued to resonate with fans and teammates alike, even as he played away from the bright lights of the NBA.
Transition to Coaching
With his playing days behind him, Walker will transition to a new role within the sport. He will be joining the Charlotte Hornets' staff as a player enhancement coach under new head coach Charles Lee. This new position reflects his enduring connection to basketball and ensures that he remains a significant presence in the sport.
Reflecting on the decision to retire, Walker shared, "I want to start this by thanking God for everything he has given me. Basketball has done more for me than I could've ever imagined, and I am super thankful for the amazing journey I've had. With that, I'm here to share that I am officially retiring from the game of basketball. This has all been a dream. When I look back, I still can't believe the things I achieved in my career."
Walker’s journey was not without its share of difficulties. Particularly emotional was his departure from the Charlotte Bobcats. "Tough days, f---ing tough days, I can't even lie. Excuse my language. It was difficult. I couldn't see myself just being on another team. It was just hard. That's all I've known was Charlotte. Definitely some tough times. I had a feeling that I wasn't going to get the offer that I wanted, and maybe not close to it, because of cap space," Walker recounted.
As he moves into coaching, Walker remains acutely aware of the support that has been instrumental throughout his career. "I know I couldn't have made it to this point without my incredible support system around me. There are so many people to thank -- my mom, dad and entire family, my teammates who have become family, and the coaches who believe in me and brought out the best in me," he expressed with gratitude.
Walker’s impact on the game extends beyond his accomplishments on the court. His journey from college star to NBA All-Star and now coach serves as an inspiring narrative for young athletes. Leading the UConn Huskies to the 2011 NCAA title with an average of 23.5 points per game and hitting a game-winning shot to beat Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament are just a couple of highlights that punctuate his storied career.
In closing, Walker assured fans and the basketball community that his departure as a player does not mean an end to his involvement in the sport. "Basketball will forever be a part of my life so this isn't goodbye. I'm excited for what's next," he remarked.
Kemba Walker’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable playing career, but his legacy and contributions to the game will undoubtedly continue through his new role in coaching and beyond.
