Jessica Campbell Breaks Barriers as First Woman Full-Time Coach in NHL History
In a groundbreaking move for the National Hockey League, Jessica Campbell has been appointed to the Seattle Kraken coaching staff, making history as the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in the league's history. Her appointment is a testament to her dedication and expertise in the world of hockey, and it ushers in a new era for diversity in the sport.
Campbell's journey to this historic achievement has been marked by numerous significant milestones. A former assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, she had already made headlines in 2022 when she became the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL). During her tenure with the Firebirds, she was entrusted with managing the power play and played a crucial role in the development of several standout players, including Tye Kartye.
Kraken coach Dan Bylsma lauded Campbell's contributions, stating, “During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level.”
A Proven Leader
Campbell's leadership skills were evident early on in her career. During the 2014-15 season, she served as team captain in the first-ever CWHL All-Star Game. Her ability to lead and inspire her teammates has been a defining characteristic of her career, and it has translated seamlessly into her coaching roles.
In 2022, she further solidified her credentials by becoming the first woman to coach a men's national team during the IIHF Men's World Championship, serving with Team Germany. Her work with the Kraken's goaltender Philipp Grubauer during the same championship showcased her ability to make a significant impact at the highest levels of the sport.
Development of Future Stars
Campbell's influence on player development is particularly noteworthy. Tye Kartye, who thrived under her guidance, won the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for the most outstanding rookie. Kartye's performance, which included 20 points (11 goals and nine assists) over 77 games for the Kraken, is a testament to Campbell's coaching prowess.
Beyond Kartye, Campbell has also played a pivotal role in the growth of other young talents like Shane Wright and Ryker Evans. Her focus on fostering strong relationships and her commitment to individual player development have been fundamental to her coaching philosophy.
A Humble Path to Success
Despite her groundbreaking achievements, Campbell remains grounded and focused on the work ahead. “I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization,” Campbell said.
Her commitment to continuous improvement and a growth mindset is evident in her approach. “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal,” she added.
Campbell's philosophy of maintaining a growth mindset is central to her success. “I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is,” she stated.
Looking Ahead
As Campbell joins the Kraken, she is expected to take on significant responsibilities, likely heading the Kraken's power play. Her expertise and experience, combined with her record of developing young talent, position her as a valuable asset to the team's coaching staff.
In a notable addition to the team's roster, the Seattle Kraken also signed 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour, further strengthening their lineup. With Campbell's appointment and the bolstering of their squad, the Kraken are poised for an exciting future as they continue to build a competitive team in the NHL.
The inclusion of Jessica Campbell in the Kraken's coaching staff is more than just a historical achievement; it represents a positive step towards inclusivity and diversity in professional sports. Her journey and accomplishments serve as an inspiration to aspiring coaches and players, proving that dedication and hard work can indeed break barriers and redefine possibilities.
