Since February 2024, Spieth has experienced approximately 20 wrist dislocations, each one more agonizing than the last. The constant bouts of dislocation severely compromised his iron play throughout the season. One particularly close call occurred when he almost withdrew from the John Deere Classic due to a dislocation. Despite the physical agony, Spieth continued to push through the pain, his performance visibly affected in every tournament he played.
"Like I said, I really didn't wanna make any excuses for myself the whole year because it wasn't hurting to hit the shot. And then I'd get into competition, and then I'd just bail. It was very strange," Spieth explained. "And so, I guess it was a big enough sample size over a year, you'd think it frustrates you after a week or two, but for me, I just kind of kept thinking, 'You know, hey, this is just something mechanically I gotta fix.'"
The Road to Surgery
By mid-season, the thought of surgery loomed large. Spieth almost opted for surgery in July but decided to push through the remainder of the season. However, the realization that rest alone would not remedy his condition ultimately forced his hand. "It was something that couldn't fix itself with rest, unfortunately. So that's why I ended up having to do this," Spieth stated.
His decision was also influenced by practical advice from fellow athletes who had undergone similar procedures. "I talked to a lot of different players who've had similar operations and a lot of guys across different sports and they're like, 'Look, one day you'll wake up and, if you're patient enough, you do the right rehab, you listen to your docs and you take your time, there'll be one day where you wake up and you're like, 'Man, I just totally forgot that there was ever an issue.' So I look forward to that day," Spieth said, illustrating his optimism for a complete recovery.
Looking Towards 2025
Spieth's recovery plan includes a goal to start hitting balls again by November 2024. However, any competitive play in December remains highly unlikely. “Playing any events in December feels like a stretch,” he admitted. This cautious approach underscores the seriousness of his commitment to ensuring the injury is fully rehabilitated before returning to professional play.
Spieth's reflections on his injury reveal a complex interplay of physical and mental challenges. He acknowledged the toll it has taken beyond mere physical pain. In one striking admission, he shared an exchange with his caddie, Michael Greller: "I actually texted [caddie] Michael [Greller] like, 'Hey man, it came out last night, it hasn't gone back in overnight. And I can't do this. I gotta go get this thing fixed now.'"
Renewed Hope and Future Aspirations
Despite the setback, Spieth remains hopeful about his recovery trajectory. His conversations with a highly experienced surgeon who assured him of the surgery's effectiveness have buoyed his spirits. "Anytime a guy who does, you know, 30–40,000 surgeries is excited about something, you know, that's reason for me to feel good about it, I guess," Spieth reflected.
With a positive outlook and a meticulous recovery plan in place, Spieth is aiming for a return to form in time for the 2025 season. "In due time, it should be better than it was before," he said, echoing a sense of optimism that his fans hope will translate into his performances on the golf course.
