Veterans from the 2008 NFL Draft
Fifteen years after they first entered the NFL, Joe Flacco, Josh Johnson, and Calais Campbell continue to make their mark on the league. These seasoned veterans, all drafted in 2008, show no signs of slowing down.
Joe Flacco: The Comeback Kid
In 2023, Joe Flacco earned the prestigious NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. The resilient quarterback, known for his prowess and unwavering determination, now plays for the Indianapolis Colts. Flacco's journey has been a testament to his ability to overcome adversity and perform at the highest level, making him an invaluable asset to his team.
Josh Johnson: A Steady Hand in Baltimore
Josh Johnson currently serves as a quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. Throughout his extensive career, Johnson has played for multiple teams across the league. His wealth of experience and adaptability have made him a reliable presence on the field, contributing significantly to each franchise he has been a part of.
Calais Campbell: A Veteran for the Dolphins
Calais Campbell, a defensive tackle, brings his veteran prowess to the Miami Dolphins. Boasting six Pro Bowl appearances and a spot on the 2010s All-Decade team, Campbell's resume speaks volumes about his impact in the NFL.
In 2023, Campbell had a productive season with the Atlanta Falcons. Starting all 17 games, he recorded 6.5 sacks, 56 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 42 quarterback pressures. His consistent performance set a high standard and showcased his enduring talent on the defensive line.
The Decision to Continue
Despite considering retirement, Campbell's love for the game ultimately influenced his decision to return for another season. A pivotal conversation with his family played a crucial role in this choice. Aware of the evolution in his game due to age, Campbell emphasizes the importance of strength and finesse.
“I thought about [retiring],” Campbell admits. “It really came down to just with the family, talking to the wife and kids. Because physically, and the desire and love for the game, has never left, not even a little bit. I have to learn how to use other parts of my game, bring a lot more of the strength part but I still have enough finesse and everything else, I've got a full box of little tools. But what keeps me going though is a love for the game.”
A New Opportunity with the Dolphins
Joining the Miami Dolphins presents a fresh opportunity for Campbell to chase a Super Bowl ring. The Dolphins' roster boasts six Pro Bowl players, and the addition of new talent further strengthens the team. Campbell sees a promising future with the Dolphins and places high value on team chemistry.
“I feel like there's a really good opportunity here. Very talented team all over the field, both offense and defense,” Campbell explains. “When you go through the roster and who you have, I just see so many people that I feel like we can really play together and really build that team chemistry you need and be a force to reckon with.”
Reuniting with Anthony Weaver
Another significant factor in Campbell's decision was the opportunity to reunite with coach Anthony Weaver. Weaver, who served as Campbell’s position coach for two seasons, understands Campbell’s capabilities and mindset.
“The main reason I wanted to come here was because I really believe in who Anthony Weaver is as a coach and our relationship,” Campbell remarks. “We talked a lot during the process, and he knows what I'm capable of doing. He understands my mind and how I see the game, and he trusts it.”
The Pursuit of the Vince Lombardi Trophy
Campbell’s ultimate goal is to win a Super Bowl, a title that has eluded him thus far. He previously played in Super Bowl XLIII with the Arizona Cardinals but fell short of securing the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.
As another NFL season looms, the 2023 campaign serves as a bright chapter in the storied careers of Joe Flacco, Josh Johnson, and Calais Campbell. These veterans, driven by their passion for the game and commitment to excellence, continue to inspire and captivate fans across the league.
