Tyler Guyton Shines as Dallas Cowboys' Rising Star
The Dallas Cowboys’ recent first-round pick, Tyler Guyton, is already creating buzz within the franchise and among the fans. Selected 29th overall, the rookie left tackle has made a significant impression through his intelligence, confidence, and adaptability—both on and off the field.
Head coach Mike McCarthy has noticed Guyton’s potential early on, stating, “I thought he had some nice reps against Micah.” Indeed, Guyton's performance during practices has been nothing short of noteworthy. Standing out during a padded practice, Guyton managed to stonewall Micah Parsons, one of the stronger defensive forces on the team. But it’s not just his on-field plays catching attention; Guyton’s off-field activities, such as participating in team jeopardy nights and a rookie karaoke session where he sang Rick James’ "Mary Jane," have also become part of his growing legend.
Tyler Guyton’s journey in football began at the University of Oklahoma, where he started 13 of his 14 collegiate games at right tackle. Transitioning to left tackle during the Cowboys' training camp, he showcased his versatility and exceptional skill. Guiding him through this transformation has been Tyler Smith, the team's left guard, who has taken on a mentorship role. "He’s helped me out a lot. He’s like a big brother to me," Guyton remarked.
Smith praises Guyton's unique combination of physical attributes and athletic prowess: "It’s not very often that you find a human being who measures how he does, 6-7, 330 and has light feet and can just move and just bully dudes… The sky truly is the limit for him and his development." Both players hail from Texas, making their bond even stronger and adding another layer to Guyton's integration into the team.
However, Guyton's path hasn’t been without challenges. An illness recently sidelined the rookie for three consecutive practices, leading to a more cautious participation in his first practice back. "I’m feeling better, for sure. I'm just under the weather, working my way back now," he mentioned, showing his determination to regain full fitness quickly.
Team quarterback Dak Prescott couldn't help but marvel at Guyton's intelligence and poise under pressure. Recalling a team jeopardy night, Prescott said, "The dude jumped up there and spelled it as fast without any hesitation as I have ever seen. Still mind blown, to be honest with you." It’s these attributes that have facilitated Guyton’s seamless adaption to the Cowboys' system. "His intelligence and confidence for sure... The guy has picked up everything we have thrown at him," Prescott added.
The upcoming joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams will be another opportunity for Guyton to showcase his skills and further his development. Reflecting on the legacy of previous left tackle, Tyron Smith, Prescott has a simple yet powerful piece of advice for the rookie: "He has to be Tyler Guyton. Doesn't really matter who played here before him... At the end of the day, you just need to be yourself and the best version of yourself."
Guyton’s promise is clear as the Cowboys anticipate his potential impact on their offensive line. His quick adaptation and natural talent have provided a glimmer of hope for a franchise often scrutinized for its draft picks. As training camp continues, eyes will be on Tyler Guyton, not just to meet expectations but to potentially exceed them and carve out a notable career with the Dallas Cowboys. The rookie sensation’s story is just beginning, and for Cowboys fans, it’s an exciting one to follow.
