Aaron Jones’ Journey: From Green Bay to Minnesota
Aaron Jones, a name synonymous with passion and performance on the gridiron, has made a significant move from the Green Bay Packers to the Minnesota Vikings. This transition marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for Jones, who has become a revered figure within the Packers’ community.
Jones' departure comes on the heels of Aaron Rogers leaving the Packers, a move that left a considerable leadership gap within the team. Jones, known for his relentless drive and leadership qualities, quickly stepped up to fill the void Rogers left behind. "He's the total package right there. I love Aaron Jones. He brings a huge spark to the team just the way he carries himself, the way he handles his business and shows up ready to work every day. I can't say enough about him," said Jordan Love, highlighting Jones' impact on the team.
Jones' time with the Packers is marked by remarkable achievements, including a memorable performance against the Dallas Cowboys in January. Jones rushed for 118 yards and scored three touchdowns on 21 carries, leading the Packers to a 48-32 playoff victory. His incredible prowess on the field has earned him the third spot in Packers' history with an impressive 5,940 rushing yards.
A Storied Career
Drafted in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Jones entered the league with a chip on his shoulder. He was joined by Jamaal Williams, a fourth-round pick, and Devante Mays, a seventh-round pick, making the 2017 draft a significant one for the Packers’ backfield. Despite facing several challenges, including a two-game suspension in 2018 for driving with marijuana in his body, Jones has consistently demonstrated resilience and growth.
Reflecting on the suspension, Jones expressed his feelings of embarrassment and gratitude towards the Packers’ organization for their unwavering support. "I was so embarrassed after it happened. They say you represent the G at all times, and I hadn't held up my part of that. I felt like I'd let everyone down who gave me a chance as a fifth-round pick. [...] The Packers had my back. Their mentality was, 'This mistake isn't you. It's only you if you don't learn from it.' They made sure I walked around our building with my head held high, even when I was feeling really low," he shared.
Adversity struck again with the passing of Jones' father due to COVID-19 complications. The Packers' support was again evident, with head coach Matt LaFleur, general manager Brian Gutekunst, and running backs coach Ben Sirmans attending the funeral. This solidarity left a deep impact on Jones, who remarked, "To say they didn't have to do that is an understatement, and I know I could never repay them on a football field."
Farewell to Green Bay
Before his departure, Jones was asked to take a pay cut for two consecutive seasons. Despite the financial challenges, his love for the team remained unwavering. "Thanks for 'betting' on me, riding with me, hashtagging for me, and everything else. Thanks for SEEING me. No G on the helmet Sunday, always one in my heart," Jones expressed in a heartfelt message to the Packers community.
Jones' contributions and character have left an indelible mark on his teammates and coaches. Dontayvion Wicks described him as the team’s “fire starter," and LaFleur echoed similar sentiments. "Certainly he is one of my favorite players that I've ever had to coach, a guy like that. Just in terms of how he goes about his business. Still got a lot of love for him. Just won't have a lot of love for him when we're playing against him," LaFleur stated, reflecting the deep respect held for Jones by the Packers’ coaching staff.
As Aaron Jones embarks on his new journey with the Minnesota Vikings, his legacy in Green Bay remains untarnished. The impact he made, both on and off the field, speaks volumes about his character and dedication. The Packers will undoubtedly miss their No. 3 rusher, but his story will continue to inspire future generations of players and fans alike.
