In a recent decision that could significantly impact the career trajectory of an embattled athlete, a federal judge has denied former NBA player Jontay Porter's request to pursue a professional basketball career in Greece.
The ruling materialized following Porter's involvement in a high-profile betting scandal, which has already resulted in his expulsion from the NBA. Once a promising forward for the Toronto Raptors, Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges related to placing prop bets on his own performance statistics in two separate games during the past season. This misconduct led to federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
A Career in Turmoil
In April, Porter was banned from the NBA, and he now faces the possibility of serving a prison sentence ranging from 3½ to over four years. The ban has left Porter and his legal team scrambling to find alternative avenues to salvage his sporting career. One such path was through European basketball.
Porter's legal representatives had petitioned Judge Hall, seeking permission for Porter to join Promitheas BC, a team competing in the Greek Basketball League and the Basketball Champions League in Europe. The proposed plan involved not just playing basketball but also relocating to Patras, Greece, with his wife and their expected child.
Porter's attorneys argued that the move to Greece would be beneficial for his ongoing treatment for gambling addiction, suggesting that in-person counseling services available there could support his rehabilitation. Additionally, they requested the return of Porter's U.S. passport to facilitate international travel.
Unconvinced Judiciary
Despite these arguments, Judge Hall was not persuaded that allowing Porter to travel overseas was appropriate. This decision held even though the United States attorney's office and the United States pretrial services officer did not oppose Porter’s request. In a letter to Judge Hall, Porter's attorneys assured the court that relocating to Greece would not interfere with his legal obligations and that Promitheas BC officials were willing to comply with any requirement for Porter to return to the United States "at a moment's notice" if necessary for legal proceedings.
Nevertheless, the judge remained firm in her decision, casting uncertainty over Porter's immediate future in professional basketball.
